Why a basic skincare routine can change everything! - raybae

Life is hectic and after a hard day of work, sometimes all you want to do is climb into bed without washing your face or moisturizing. Or maybe you find yourself hitting the snooze alarm for five more minutes of sleep instead of making time for your skin.  But there are several benefits of sticking to a daily skincare routine, no matter how tired you are. To help convince you, here are the benefits of having a basic skincare routine.

What are the basic steps of skincare?

The best basic skincare routine only takes 5-10 minutes twice daily to do and has three very basic steps. Cleanse, Treat, and Protect.

First. You need to cleanse

Our skin sheds about 600,000 dead cell particles every hour! The outermost layer of our skin continually changes because the older cells that we see on the surface make way for the newer skin cells from the lower layers. This means that the healthy and vibrant skin you have today can suddenly look dull and tired tomorrow as your skin cells get ready to shed and fall off.

So, the first important step in a basic skincare routing it to cleanse. By doing this you are washing away dirt, makeup, excess oil, dead skin cells, and environmental impurities that end up on your face naturally throughout the day from your skin.  Below are the steps for how to properly wash your face.

Step one. Make sure that you are using the right cleanser for your specific skin type!

Dry Skin - Look for a cream cleanser, to help moisturize the skin while cleansing.
Oily Skin - Use a gel or foam cleanser, to get rid of any dirt and oil on your skin without irritating the skin.
Combination Skin - Means that some parts of your skin are oily (usually the T-Zone area) while other parts are normal or dry. So you will need a cleanser for each specific type of skin.
Sensitive Skin – Use the gentlest cleanser that you can find because your skin can become easily irritated. These types of cleansers are usually made from plant oils and from natural skin care lines.
Acne Prone Skin - Look for a gentle cleanser that contains salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, rosehip oil, or tea tree oil to help keep those pimples at bay.

    Step two.
Open the skins pores and lift dirt and bacteria from the skin. Use lukewarm water to wet your face by splashing some water onto your face using your hands. But make sure to avoid water that is too hot because it can dry out the skin.

    Step three.
Gently massage about a dime-sized amount of your chosen cleanser all over your skin. Remember that the skin on your face is thin and sensitive, so there is no need to scrub vigorously. Continue massaging for around 45 seconds to give the cleanser time to work.

    Step four
. After you have gently cleansed you should then rinse thoroughly using lukewarm water. There should not be any suds of cleanser left on the skin.

    Step five.
Pat dry with a clean towel. You don’t want to rub the skin dry as this may irritate the skin, leaving it red and flaky.

But aren't you supposed to use a toner? Toning is NOT necessary because most toner remove natural moisturizing factors.

    Second. Treat your skin

Treating your skin is another important step in the best basic skincare routine. For this you step you will need to be specific about your skins needs, depending on type. There are five main skin types: oily, dry, combination, normal, and sensitive. If you are not sure how to tell, check out our full article, that will help you to learn about what your specific skin type is, and the proper treatment for each type.

No matter what your skin type is, you MUST MOISTURIZE! It is so important to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized. A balanced moisturizer goes a long way at helping to improve the overall appearance of skin by providing the ingredients that will help maintain your skin’s healthy cells and protect them from irritation.

When your skin is dehydrated, it can lead to flaking, irritation, or even oily skin due to overproduction of sebum which is what causes breakouts and acne. By moisturizing your skin daily, you reduce your chances of any skin problems arising and are also giving your skin a protective layer between your pores and any makeup or environmental factors for the day.

Third. You must protect your skin

Third step in order of skincare routine is to use topical protectants like sunscreen during the day and a collagen mask in the evening to help hydrate, calm, repair, and boost your skin's elasticity.

    In the morning:
use sunscreen to protect your skin from UVA damage. Which can lead to dark spots and patches on pigmented skin, redness of face in sensitive skin, oil secretion in oily skin, dryness in dry skin and can cause wrinkles in all skin types.  You should apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to going out in sun.
    In the evening:
use a collagen mask, moisturizing night cream or anti-aging serum. If you are careful and make a point to wash your skin and remove your makeup every night, your skin will be better able to repair itself, while treatment products and moisturizers will absorb more deeply.

Did you know: The night is an ideal time to use these replenishing products because our cell turnover is faster at night, and this allows your products to do their job better. Meaning that your skin actually works harder to regenerate while you sleep!

Benefits of following a daily basic skincare routine

Improves the overall health of your skin and prevents future skin issues

Just like any other part of your body, if you take care of your skin, it will be healthier. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It does important things like protect us from extreme weather, infections, and toxic substances.

If you respect your skin and follow a daily basic skincare routine steadily, it will help to prevent acne, treat wrinkles, and improve the clarity of your skin.  With everything that our skin does for us, the least we can do is help keep it healthy and refreshed.

It is cheaper and easier to prevent than fight long term

Taking good care of your skin health daily will save you money in the long run. When skin issues such as a breakout, excess dryness or oil production frequently happen. It can lead to long term skin problems like hyperpigmentation, deep wrinkles, acne scarring, or other skin issues.

By maintaining a daily basic skincare routine and can prevent those problems from ever taking place. Meaning you won’t need to make those costly trips to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon in the future.

Your skin will work harder for you

We have all heard of the “golden rule” which is “treat others as you would like to be treated. Well, when you take care of your skin, your skin will take care of you. It might sound silly, but it’s true.

    Slows Down Aging

While those in their 20s and early 30s may not have to worry yet about the signs of aging, having a daily skincare regimen at a young age helps to slow down the effects of aging. This is because, as we grow older, our skin begins to lose its strength and elasticity. When we clean, exfoliate, moisturize, and use sunscreen on a regular basis, we give our skin some of its strength and elasticity back in the process.

While it’s impossible to beat off the signs of aging away forever, if the idea of wrinkles in your 30s scare you, then it’s time to set up your daily skincare routine.

Your glow will start to come back

At some point, most of us will notice a decrease in skin glow resulting in dullness. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. If you regularly follow a basic skincare routine, you’ll get your glow back.

Cell turnover slows down as we age, so it’s vital to help the process along so our skin can shed dead cells by washing our faces twice daily. When we cleanse the top layer of skin and follow up with treating and protecting that layer, over time your skin will start to look healthy and begin to glow once more.

    Boosts Confidence

No one likes to see dark circles under their eyes or getting a breakout that makes you want to stay home and hide. When we properly take care of our skin, we are also helping to beat away our biggest skincare insecurities.

Plus, once you have followed your basic skincare routine, your skin feels so much better than if you didn’t do a thing to it before walking out the door. The feeling of soft, happy skin is a great confidence boost as you head out for the day, versus going into the world with an unwashed face and all your insecurities front and center.

    Self-Care Can be Fun

If you’ve had an extra-long or stressful day, it’s always a good idea to indulge in some self-care. Taking 5-10 minutes to yourself can not only help to reduce your stress levels, but it can also have lots of extra added benefits to your skin. Doing those special things regularly for your skin will only continue to reap in the benefits both for your stress and your skin.

Consistency is what helps you achieve visible results

How many of you have bought the latest skincare item promising results only to use it a couple of times before declaring it ineffective? When it comes to our face and skincare regimen, we expect to see instant results, and it seems our patience is exceptionally thin when this doesn’t happen. We can get so caught up in the idea of miracle ingredients or finding the fountain of youth that they expect immediate results. Dramatic results will not happen overnight. It can often take weeks of consistent use for noticeable results to happen.

You should introduce your skin to one new product at a time and be patient, as frustrating as it is seeing results can take weeks. But you will be better off and less frustrated long term. The key to seeing those changes is to stick to your skincare regimen.

The results you’re beginning to see will be easier to maintain

I like to think of a skincare routine like a workout routine. When you first start your workout routine, you might not see results those first few days. The same is true with a regular skincare regimen. Your skin will continue to look healthy and revitalized if you don’t give up on the routine.
